I have noticed that most (American?) LJ users that like German music mention Rammstein but nothing else. No wonder that some people keep thinking Germans are hard, emotionless and rather primitive, if that's all foreigners know about German culture.
It's time to provide those who are interested with some suggestions about really good music. I have just completed a new version of a self-made CD called "Deutsch 3". The former versions were presents for foreign students that speak German. Most of the songs aren't brand new, but have good lyrics and are very famous in Germany. That's why I selected more romantic or slow songs - they are more popular. The compilation contains rock, pop, punk, hiphop, ballads and singer/songwriter music.
Deutsch 3 (2004):
Nena - Irgendwie, irgendwo, irgendwann
Extrabreit - Hurra, hurra, die Schule brennt
Die Fantastischen Vier - Sie ist weg
Fettes Brot - Jein
BAP - Verdamp lang her
Die Toten Hosen - Wünsch Dir was
Die Ärzte - Mach die Augen Zu
Blumfeld - Graue Wolken
Echt - Du trägst keine Liebe in Dir
Sportfreunde Stiller - Ein Kompliment
2raumwohnung - 2 von Millionen von Sternen
Laith Al-Deen - Dein Lied
Udo Jürgens - Ich war noch niemals in New York
Karat - Über sieben Brücken
Reinhard Mey - Über den Wolken
Volker Lechtenbrink - Ich mag
Rio Reiser - Junimond
Herbert Grönemeyer - Bochum
Marius Müller-Westernhagen - Freiheit (live)

I feel the same way when I read what are the French artists that most (American) lj users listen to: Édith Piaf, Serge Gainsbourg, etc. I try to give them some good (and RECENT) names whenever they ask for it, but it gets tiring to always repeat. :) I should do the same thing.

Re:
can you name a few good french artists for those uneducated enough to never have explored that area? thanks.February 3 2004, 19:50:33 UTC 8 years ago
Louise Attaque [Comme on a Dit]
Matmatah [La Ouache]
Indochine (well, they're 80s, so they're not extremely recent, but I still enjoy them) [Le Birthday Album]

Re:
Aw I'm sorry, I certainly didn't mean to sound like that. It's the same thing for me when I try to know foreign music, at first I only know the "classic" music (like Rammstein, as he said). I guess English-speakers would feel the same way if they only heard people of other countries saying "oh I LOVE English music! Sinatra, Elvis, they're great!" I mean, Gainsbourg is good, but I'd like for some more "modern" music to be known too. :)May you'll want to check the comment I posted in reply to the latest post in this community.
And since Tori Amos is in your interests, I'll add those two artists: Marie-Jo Thério and Jorane.

Xavier is probably the best german artist around. (Söhne Mannheim being also one of his projects)
